引述 :『There are many reasons why I am delighted to talk to Neave Brown, but one is overriding. He designed housing, homes and shared spaces without distinguishing between his needs as an individual and the requirement of those unknown to him who would live in his designs. He therefore brought an aspiration for quality and longevity to British housing that in my opinion remains unrivalled. Neave is best known for his work as lead architect at the London Borough of Camden, where two of his most prominent projects were Alexandra Road in St John’s Wood and Fleet Road in Hampstead. On a more personal level visiting Winscombe Street in Dartmouth Park, Neave’s home of 40 years, and finding out about its making, was a source of inspiration on our journey that became a small collaborative terrace at 1-3 Whatcott’s Yard in Stoke Newington, also known as In-between. Winscombe Street offered a rare precedent of a London terrace designed and built for a group of young architects. Not being able to self-finance the project, Neave and Antony Hunt approached Camden Council, which agreed to support them in forming a housing association to build what turned out to be five identical houses and shared spaces developed to suit five different briefs. Housing has an ability to marry large, urban scale with the minutest of details and incidents, but it can be frustrating to observe the slow advances made with this building type in recent years. The latest improvements in the sector are driven by legislation and technology, and I miss in our brief’s greater sensitivity to the social aspects of housing, as well as to issues of spatial quality and constructive integrity. Homes are at the peak of their economic value, so should they not spill over with inventiveness, beauty and the ability to last? One Alexandra Road resident of over 20 years writes: “The genius of the design lies in the subtle way it supports family life and community spirit without forcing it down our throats. It is as easy to be part of the community as it is to stay aloof.” I can only dream that one day somebody will write an equally flattering account of our work, and I am looking forward to listening to Neave Brown’s tales.』
