Politics in India is essentially local and India’s voters elect their representatives based on small local and regional issues, instead of the big national issues. As a result, election rallies and door-to-door canvassing, supplemented by local hoardings and print ads in the vernacular languages have traditionally been at the core of election campaigning in India.

Now, you didn't think you had to wait until the U.S. midterms to get another taste of how the Internet is shaping electoral democracy, did you? No, no. In fact, coming up in just a few weeks is the the kickoff to a round of voting for Lok Sabha, India's lower house of Parliament. And with India's growth spurt of young voters, intense interest in the Obama campaign there, and the legacy of the socially-mediated Mumbai attacks, India is primed to serve as both "the largest democratic event in human history," as Google is calling it, and a potentially fascinating demonstration of modern wired politics. If where the Internet meets politics is your cup of tea (and if it's not, might we suggest another blog?), then you're going to want to keep an eye trained on India for the next several weeks.

印度政治基本上充滿地方色彩,選民依據地方與區域的小議題投票選出代表,而非著眼於全國性的大議題,故造勢遊行、挨家挨戶拜票、地方看板與平面方言廣告一直是印度選戰主軸。

Burning at the Grassroots: inside the Dean machine Popup

Burning at the Grassroots: inside the Dean machine Popup

charlesc 收藏於 2009/01/02
引述 :『This book analyzes the first great political phenomenon of the Internet age. Analysis from political scientists, journalists, academicians, and figures in the political world adds expertise to the first-person experience of key figures in the Dean campaign, ranging from the grassroots of Washington, Iowa, and New Hampshire to the DeanforAmerica Headquarters in Vermont. The book is extensively documented, with over 250 footnotes, 24 charts, graphs, and tables to display data on political trends, polling, and campaign fundraising and spending. Burning at the Grassroots carefully examines the 2004 Democratic presidential primaries, while providing the historical context of all the modern primaries. Through research, as well as over 50 interviews, the book profiles Dean, along with the other major players in the 2004 Democratic presidential primary season. The mystery of how more than 50 million dollars was spent is solved inside the pages of this book. The role of Internet Merlin Joe Trippi, and his role in the office culture in Burlington is fully described in Burning at the Grassroots: Inside the Dean Machine.』

Here's what Obama says about his thinking: "One of the things that I'm really proud about this campaign," he told an audience in Indianapolis on April 30, "is that we've built a structure that can sustain itself after the campaign." He then talks about how he won so many states, including states like Idaho. It was because of volunteers, he says, "they built the campaign." We didn't originally have big plans for Idaho, he tells his listeners, "but people made this structure."

因此,奥巴马强大的募款能力,其原因并非以互联网为渠道,通过所谓“长尾效应”聚集小额捐款。这仍是个“金钱—民意—媒体”的循环互动过程,通过网络而源源汇入的经费,是结果而不是原因。

The "New Organizers" have succeeded in building what many netroots-oriented campaigners have been dreaming about for a decade. Other recent attempts have failed because they were either so "top-down" and/or poorly-managed that they choked volunteer leadership and enthusiasm; or because they were so dogmatically fixated on pure peer-to-peer or "bottom-up" organizing that they rejected basic management, accountability and planning. The architects and builders of the Obama field campaign, on the other hand, have undogmatically mixed timeless traditions and discipline of good organizing with new technologies of decentralization and self-organization.

By the time polls closed, more than 5.4 million of you had shared that you voted with your friends by clicking the "I Voted" button on Facebook, taking accountability for your contribution to the democratic process. All day long, the running tally of votes kept climbing on Facebook. So, too, did the number of status updates about friends voting, and the flurry of comments and encouragement about picking the next President. The national energy was palpable and contagious; we hope it spurred people on the fence to become an active part of this historic day by heading to the polls.

Additionally, it would appear that Obama will definitely be making use of the Web and social media to encourage public service. Change.gov features a top-level link to “America Serves,” which, currently is just a policy outline, but does point to the Web playing a pivotal role in this aspect of his administration. Other features include a blog (with comments disabled) – where the only post right now is Obama’s victory speech – as well as the latest announcements and information for the press.

A number of people have responded to my endorsement of Barack Obama with complaints that it is inappropriate for a tech publisher to publish on political issues. While most of the people responding to the post have either been supportive, or thoughtfully countered one or more of my arguments, a number of people have threatened to stop buying from O'Reilly as a result of my endorsement.

Mr. Hughes, 24, was one of four founders of Facebook. In early 2007, he left the company to work in Chicago on Senator Obama’s new-media campaign. Leaving behind his company at such a critical time would appear to require some cognitive dissonance: political campaigns, after all, are built on handshakes and persuasion, not computer servers, and Mr. Hughes has watched, sometimes ruefully, as Facebook has marketed new products that he helped develop.

But as important as these strategies and tactics were, the fundamental building block is the candidate. The candidates who are successful online are the ones who don't just lead campaigns or political parties -- they lead movements. When they ask people to get involved, they really mean it. Our 2012 candidate has to be comfortable with building a movement. Before a change in strategy can work, our candidates need to change.

And we here at techPresident and Personal Democracy Forum will keep on tracking how technology is transforming politics.

Both candidates used the Internet to reach voters. But Team Obama mastered the medium early and exploited it to the hilt. Along the way, it changed politics -- and perhaps government -- forever.
