近年來，隨著「永續發展」一詞的廣泛使用，演育出「永續發展教育（Education of Sustainability）」一詞。
環境教育的主要三個主旨： 一、了解環境的教育（about the environment）， 二、從環境中學習的教育（from the environment）及 三、為環境而教育（for the environment）。
