Climate activists worldwide are raising the stakes, with many turning to civil disobedience to make their voices heard. Actions in recent months have ranged from chaining themselves to coal conveyor belts in Sydney, to forming port blockades in the Netherlands, to scaling smokestacks in the United Kingdom. The rise in activism reflects growing frustration against the continued, and expanding, use of coal as a source of energy. The fuel, while affordable, is directly linked to climate change and air pollution.

A new BBC poll suggests otherwise [ark]. They found that substantial majorities in all countries (83% overall) are ready to make personal sacrifices in their lifestyle and behavior, including paying more for their energy, to help address climate change. And some 50% supported taxes on energy such as oil and coal -- 77% if the revenues was used to promote energy efficiency or developing cleaner fuels. Approximately 22,000 people were polled across 21 countries.
美國NGO的Sierra Club代表Michele Perrault女士的經驗分享，表示合作（work together），就可能是解答。大家都知道現任的美國總統布希並不支持減碳，反倒是由前明星阿諾執政的加州，在減碳與再生能源方面有傑出的表現。Sierra Club長久以來與加州政府在環保議題上形成工作伙伴，其具體的成果，就是去年阿諾簽署的「全球暖化對策法案 」（Global Warming Solutions Act, AB32），是一個運用市場機制，以經濟效益達成溫室氣體減量的法案。不單在與政府合作 ，Sierra Club 以其環保的專業與組織的信譽，也在與企業、學術、宗教團體等其他團體合作上有傑出的表現。我聽到最感動的一句話是：「早年連到底有沒有氣候變遷這個問題都無法達成共識，如今我們所提出的解決方案是來自有些企業的分享。」
究竟什麼原因造成地球暖化或許有待更多的研究與證據，但是挽救地球、挽救環境的惡化卻是地球村上的每一個居民刻不容緩的議題。
